Hangouts is also smart enough to keep up with these conversations across all devices, so you should see these SMS threads on mobile and desktop. Since installing the Google Hangouts extension on my Chrome account (on my own laptop), she now gets my Hangouts popups on her computer when using Chrome under her username. From here, you can send both regular SMS messages or MMS (multimedia). I sometimes use it with my Chrome username. Click on that, choose a phone number to send to, and Hangouts will open a new conversation window with that contact to start an SMS thread. If they have a phone number attached to their name, you should see an option for “SMS” at the top of the conversation box, up next to the Video, Call, and People icons. Open your list of contacts in either Gmail or the Hangouts extension and start a new conversation with someone. It’s pretty simple to do really, again, as long as you have a Google Voice number attached to Hangouts. If you have a Google Voice number that has now been associated with Hangouts, you can choose to send an SMS to contacts, assuming you have attached a number to their contact information.

Notification preferences can be set in the Google Voice and Hangouts merger in full swing (again), most of you who use a combination of the service are now noticing an added benefit – SMS and MMS through both Gmail and the Chrome extension for Hangouts. Chat messages are fully integrated with Gmail across all platforms. More information on the differences between Rooms and Group Conversations can be found here. Rooms are collaborative spaces where you can invite individuals or entire Google Groups which can contain multiple threads, whereas Group Conversations are strictly a single conversation with a group of individuals. From Gmail or, you can create a Group Conversation, a Room, or send a direct message. You will still be able to search for classic Hangouts chats in Gmail. *Google will deprecate classic Hangouts entirely by end of year 2020, which means the service will be inaccessible. The classic Hangouts bot in Chat will also notify you of missed group messages from classic Hangouts. Users cannot chat in classic Hangouts by visiting in a mobile browser or the Hangouts mobile app. The classic Hangouts web interface for chat, will remain available during this transition in case you need more time to access and move certain group conversations. All previous chat history from classic Hangouts will be accessible in Gmail search. These group chats will need to be recreated in Google Chat in order to continue the conversation. You will be able to continue recent 1:1 direct messages from classic Hangouts in Google Chat, but group messages from classic Hangouts (including their history) will not be migrated to Google Chat. *The classic Hangouts mobile app will no longer function after and you will be prompted to install the Chat mobile app, or use the integrated Chat features in the Gmail mobile app.
On, refresh your Gmail inbox to get the new Chat in Gmail experience. 
You'll be able to access the desktop app from a prompt that will appear inside Hangouts is basically used for interacting with people, sharing your updates, talking with people over video-call, sharing the pictures etc.

Download the new standalone desktop app if you've been using the classic Hangouts Chrome extension or app. The Google hangouts extension have many attractive features, like it allows you control the screen size of chat window, you can minimize or maximize it, you can also hide the chat window. Download the new mobile app for Android or iOS (optionally you can download the latest version of the Gmail mobile app which will have Chat integration built in, similar to the desktop experience). When you open Gmail you will see the Google Chat interface, instead of Google Hangouts (now referred to as "classic Hangouts"). Beginning, Google Chat will replace Google Hangouts in the Gmail interface.
